Snoopy and I feel Pretty
When I was a kid I used to love the Charlie Brown cartoons. I didn't care which one it was whether it had to do with The Great Pumpkin, the little red haired girl, Charlie brown and the spelling bee - I didn't care. I loved them all and would watch every single one of them when they were shown on TV. As a matter of fact, the first thing I ever drew that looked half-way decent was a picture of Snoopy sleeping on top of his house with Woodstock flying around him. I think that I even named my first dog Snoopy which was soon followed by my dog Chewbacca, but that's a whole different story. Well, last night they were showing a Charlie Brown Christmas so I thought this would be great for my nephew and niece to watch, because I knew they would love it just as much as I did when I was their age. I turned it on and we all started watching it. I told them how I used to love to watch it as a kid and they thought it was funny. Well, they thought it was funny that I was a kid at one time, not that I liked Charlie Brown.
"You were kid before?" My nephew asked.
"Yes, I was a kid just like you."
My nephew started laughing, "Did you come out of granma's stomach?"
"Let's just watch Charlie Brown." I didn't want to start answering questions that would come after that. "you're going to like Snoopy."
"is Snoopy an alien from another planet?"
"No, he's a regular dog" I answered. "he's not from another planet and he doesn't shoot lazers out his eyes."
"Does he have superpowers?" My nephew was getting restless. For some reason he didn't find the cartoon too inteesting
"No, just watch. This is going to be good."
"Snoopy is boring." My nephew lost interest in the cartoon because there weren't any lasers, space ships, or aliens, so he went off to destroy the imaginary aliens invading the house.
My niece watched about five more minutes before she announced, "I want to watch Hellboy!"
I looked her, "But this is Charlie Brown." she didn't care, she had made up her mind and just like my sister, she's stubborn as hell.
"I want to watch Hellboy!"
"Snoopy is going to come out in a little bit" How could any kid resist Snoopy? He's an American Icon and he's sooooooo cute (sorry, I went all kiddie giddy there)
"I don't like Snoopy. He's ugly. I want to watch Hellboy!" I know, I was shocked too - how could anyone think Snoopy is ugly?
"What do you mean Snoopy is ugly?"
"I don't like him. He's scary."
"Ok, Snoopy is scary, but Hellboy is not?" I had to stop there because I came to my senses and realized that I was trying to argue with a two almost three year old kid.
"I want Hellboy!"
I gave up and put Hellboy in. We both laid on the floor and watched Hellboy until I started to doze off. I've seen Hellboy enough times that I don't have to watch it anymore. I work up just as my niece was trying to put little girl make-up on me.
"what are you doing?" I asked moving away from her before she could put purple eye shadow on my eye lids.
"Nothing." she laughed. "I'm making you pretty."
"I don't want to be pretty." I took the eye shadow Q-tip applicator away from her. I was going to disarm her before this escalated into something ugly.
"But I have to." she said, trying to grab the eye shadow applicator from me
"No, you don't have to. I'm a dude, dudes aren't pretty."
Ok" she said then ran off probably to put little kid make-up on her brother.
And just like that it was over. I got up and checked myself in the mirror to make sure that she hadn't put anything on me that was not manly - if it had been gangster just out of prison tear drops I might have left them on, but there was nothing, so I got ready, slipped on my Crocs and went to my friend's house.
When I arrived, my friend asked me if I would take off my shoes because they had just installed some new carpet and they were trying to keep it looking new for as long as they possibly could. I didn't mind - I'd taken a shower, so I was sure my feet didn't stink and besides I was wearing Crocs they don't' make your feet stink - ha! Well, as I took off my shoes I noticed that all my toenails and my toes were painted pink and purple.

I love this post. The peanuts are like comfort food. Please keep hellboy far away from me. I don't know who he is, and given that I have two boys and one starting kindergarten next year--I'm guessing its only a matter of time.

My wife hates everything Peanuts.
I didn't know this until after we married, because that makes me sad.

Gee, I really feel for you.

I'm trying to decide whether to express my disbelief at a 3 year old finding snoopy scary or the mirth at your painted toe nails
I'm keeping cartoon network away from my kids and only showing them dvd's of my favourite cartoons when they arrive.
Seriously, who doesn't love snoopy? It's S-N-O-O-P-Y! Someone once gifted me a shampoo in a snoopy shaped bottle. I kept water in that shampoo bottle long after I'd used it all up. I wouldn't let my mum through it away. I wanted to make it my water bottle.

Sweet! That is awesome. And I agree with you, how in the world could any kid not be interested in Charlie Brown and Snoopy?
Oh, off topic, did you see the Christmas special last year? Apparently the marketing genious behind the team of cartoons was a briliant mastermind. It was a combo of Charlie Brown and Winnie the Pooh. The commercials kept egging people to tune in to the "Brown-Pooh" Christmas...ROFLMAO Brown-Pooh Christmas. I bet that dude either got fired or a big time raise. That is classic.

Bwahahaha. Pwned by your niece.
Maybe Hellboy should do a Christmas special.

@Ann - You've got a lot in store as far as things little boys like - try finding a Bakcugan (sp)righ now for a Christmas gift. Wait, it's going to be great
@Hallie - I like to think that black is more my color, but that I look fairly decent in purple.
@Badass Geek - you should do a Charlie Brown intervention and lock her in a room with the Peanuts cartoons running on a loop until she come out saying "Wahh wah wah wahh Wahhh Wah"
@Samar - I was shocked because I really thought that they would love the Peanuts cartoons especially Snoopy and I was also shocked to learn just how hard it is to get toenail polish off. How do you girls deal with this sort of stuff?
@Sal - I didn't see or hear about a "Brown-Pooh" special, but after reading my blogs I'm sure you know it would be something I'd watch - oh wait, you mean a Charlie Brown, Winnie the Pooh special...I'd probably watch that too.
@Jim - I've come to conclusion that both my nephew and my niece are smarter than me. A Hellboy Christmas Special would be awesome!!!

This blog made me smile as I was thinking of Rupert the Bear this Christmas for some reason... And of course although he's a lot 'straighter' than Snoopy, he's part of my childhood.
And then of course your last line made me burst out laughing! Great post, thanks Tony.

Hellboy over Snoopy. Damn, the world will end soon. Although your story sounded like a Christmas sitcom in itself. Great stuff. I'd like to see Snoopy and Woodstock kick Hellboy's ass this Christmas.

HA! You're such a girlie man with those pink/purple toenails! I painted my then boyfriend's toes once and he forgot all about it and wore flip flops to my parent's house for dinner. My mom never let him live it down!
I've watched the Charlie Brown specials in recent years and wondered how they'll compete with all of the new cartoons around. I guess I was right since your niece and nephew hated it... we'll still try with our kids in a couple of years.

@Katherine - thanks for stopping by my blog. I hope you come back and read more. I had to do a search on Rupert because at first I thought you were talking about Stewie's bear from The Family Guy
@King of New York Hacks - that would be something to watch - I'd rent that.
@Casey - The funny thing is that someone gave me a Charlie Brown ornament today and my niece asked me where his dog was. I told her that I thought she said he was ugly to which she replied, "I was kidding. He's cute" Maybe Snoopy and Woodstock still have a chance.

Good Blog...It's a different era...more innocent during our childhood. We were happy with Peanuts, Johnny Quest, Scooby Doo, Sigmund the Sea Monster and the classic school house rock.
So did you tell your friend to excuse your painted toes and nails since you were planning to possibly audition for the opening in the rock group Motley Crue.

@MaryAnn - my favorite character was Linus with his blanket. Hellboy is pretty cool too, but it's a totally different thing.
@Toughguy - Dude, I don't even know who Sigmund the Sea Monster is. He sounds like the Hellboy of his time
My friend has a kid the same age as my niece and sometimes they get together and play, so he knew right away where that came from, but that didn't stop him from laughing though.

Good morning. America believes in education: the average professor earns more money in a year than a professional athlete earns in a whole week.
I am from Guyana and learning to read in English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Excessive sweating affects about two percent of the world; population."
Thank you very much :p. Adriel.
